At a time marked by international geopolitical tensions, the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, reiterated Spain's "firm, unwavering and permanent commitment" to NATO. She did so during the swearing-in of the new director of her Technical Cabinet, Admiral Gonzalo Villar Rodríguez, at the Ministry's headquarters in Madrid.
The Minister stressed that Spain "is always there in the most difficult moments", highlighting the crucial role played by the Armed Forces in international missions. She mentioned as a recent example the evacuation of Spaniards from Iran and Tel Aviv, an operation carried out by Air and Space Army planes.
Robles also emphasized the Defense Ministry's effort to increase investment in defense and security, and to continue promoting the modernization of the Armed Forces. "We are going to do so because we have an admirable Spanish defense industry," she said.
The recently appointed director of the Technical Cabinet, Gonzalo Villar, has an extensive career in the Navy since 1985. He has been head of the Ferrol Arsenal and commander of the Fleet Amphibious and Projection Group, leading the Expeditionary Combat Group 'Dédalo' during deployments in 2023 and 2024. He has also held strategic positions both inside and outside the Navy, including roles in the Defense Staff and SEGENPOL.
In his thank-you speech, Admiral Villar stated that his accumulated experience will be key to contribute to the new position with responsibility and strategic vision.
