A merchant vessel was assaulted at sea by stowaways attempting to remove drug bundles from containers and transfer them to another vessel. The operation prevented the entry of a large cache of cocaine into Spanish territory.
The Guardia Civil has thwarted last night an attempt to introduce 1,300 kilos of cocaine into the peninsula. The operation focused on a container ship sailing on the route between Vigo and Malaga, which was located about 40 miles from the Bay of Cadiz.
Assault on the high seas
According to the investigation, several stowaways boarded the vessel at sea with the aim of extracting the drugs stored in containers and transferring them to a second vessel. However, the early intervention of the Guardia Civil made it possible to intercept the vessel before the stash could be carried out.
Escort and port search
After intercepting the vessel, Guardia Civil agents escorted it to the port of Cadiz, where an operation was deployed for its inspection. On the upper deck, near the containers, 38 bales of cocaine were found, with a total weight of approximately 1,300 kilos. The inspection is still ongoing due to the large size of the vessel.
Open research
The operation remains open and further arrests are not ruled out in the coming hours. The Guardia Civil is keeping the vessel in custody while its contents are being thoroughly analyzed and the possible involvement of the crew or international criminal networks is being investigated.
