Colombian Army seizes weapons of residual group and captures two alleged members in Nariño

The operation, carried out in coordination with the National Police, resulted in the seizure of a large arsenal belonging to GAO-r Franco Benavides, along with the capture in flagrante delicto of two individuals who were attempting to flee.

Joint operation in rural area of El Peñol

Troops from Infantry Battalion No. 9 Battle of Boyacá, attached to the Twenty-third Brigade of the National Army, in coordination with the National Police, carried out a military operation in the municipality of El Peñol, department of Nariño, which resulted in the capture of two individuals and the seizure of abundant war material.

Thanks to intelligence work carried out over several days, the presence of armed individuals in the area was identified. The operation included three days of covert tracking by military and police personnel, who managed to intercept the suspects as they attempted to flee in a pickup truck.

Arsenal seized and assets confiscated

The following items were seized during the operation:

  • 5 assault rifles
  • 3 shotguns
  • 6 handguns
  • More than 1,900 rounds of ammunition of different calibers
  • 33 suppliers (ammunition magazines)
  • Supply material (clothing, campaign equipment)
  • Communications elements
  • 911,000 Colombian pesos in cash
  • 1 pickup truck
  • 1 motorcycle

All this material, together with those captured, was handed over to the competent authorities. According to initial investigations, the elements belonged to the Franco Benavides Structure, a residual organized armed group (GAO-r) active in this area of southwestern Colombia.

Continued commitment against armed groups

The National Army reaffirms its commitment to continue executing joint, coordinated and inter-institutional military operations in Nariño and other regions, with the objective of neutralizing the logistical and operational capabilities of organized armed groups that persist in threatening the security and tranquility of the population.
