The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, received the doctors of the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu who were decorated for their outstanding medical work with patients from conflict zones where Spain maintains a military presence. The official recognition took place in an emotional ceremony held at the Hospital Central de la Defensa Gómez Ulla.
This collaboration between the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu and the Gómez Ulla has made it possible to successfully operate on several children with complex pathologies from countries such as Iraq and Mali. This is an exemplary synergy between civilian and military health care that demonstrates the humanitarian vocation of the Armed Forces and health professionals.
"It is a source of pride to be part of the stories of these children," said Robles during the presentation of a plaque of appreciation to the doctors. The minister highlighted the commitment of the healthcare team, which she compared to that of the Spanish military: "They both work for others, trying to make this world a better place".
The doctors explained to the minister the complexity of the interventions performed, which were real surgical challenges. They emphasized that their greatest reward is to be able to save lives and offer hope to patients who come from regions with very limited healthcare resources.
