Farewell to "Abuelo Gris": the Navy decommissioned the historic ship "Contramaestre Casado".
With more than 70 years of history and four decades in the service of the Spanish Navy, the logistic ship "Contramaestre Casado" (A-01) officially bids farewell. Affectionately nicknamed "Grandfather Grey" for being one of the oldest in the fleet, only surpassed by the emblematic "Juan Sebastián de Elcano", has caused its definitive discharge this July 1st with a solemn ceremony at the Naval Base of La Carraca (Cádiz).
A ceremony steeped in history and tradition
The ceremony was presided over by the Chief Admiral of the Cadiz Arsenal, Vice Admiral Rubén Rodríguez Peña, accompanied by senior commanders such as Brigadier General José Luis Souto Aguirre and Rear Admiral Fernando Poole Quintana. Also in attendance were former commanders of the ship, civil authorities and other personalities linked to its history.
A seafaring legacy at the service of Spain
During its long career, the "Contramaestre Casado" transported ammunition, vehicles, aviation material and military personnel, including several missions with the Legion. One of its most singular services was its annual participation in Holy Week, transporting the Legionnaires to Malaga for the procession with the Cristo de la Buena Muerte (Christ of the Good Death).
Final honors to the veteran ship
In his final speech, Lieutenant Commander Ignacio Vicente Salas, the ship's last Commander, recalled the ship's key moments. Then, Lieutenant Commander Víctor Hernández Usero lowered the National Flag for the last time, marking the end of an era. As a tribute, mementos were given to the former Commanders of the "Contramaestre Casado".
The dismantling of the ship began last November 10, culminating with the removal of equipment, ammunition and fuel under the coordination of the Cadiz Arsenal.
