
Allied defense chiefs met at NATO headquarters to coordinate their deterrence posture, reaffirm their support for Ukraine and prepare for the upcoming summit in The Hague.
This May 14, 2025, the 193rd Session of the NATO Military Committee in Chiefs of Defense format was held in Brussels. The meeting was attended by the top military leaders of the 32 allied countries, who addressed key issues such as the Alliance's deterrence and defense posture, continued support for Ukraine and preparations for the NATO summit scheduled to take place in The Hague in June.
During the opening of the session, the Chairman of the Military Committee, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, underlined that this meeting demonstrates NATO's lasting unity and strength. He stressed that cohesion among allied armed forces is the fundamental pillar of collective defense. In his words, military authorities must continue to provide timely and clear advice to the political leadership, especially in complex times such as the present.
The Supreme Allied Commander, Europe (SACEUR) briefed the Chiefs of Defense on the current situation and prospects for NATO operations, missions and activities, with emphasis on strengthening NATO's deterrence posture.
In a subsequent session, Supreme Allied Commander for Transformation (SACT) Admiral Pierre Vandier led a dialogue on NATO's defense planning process, as well as advances in innovation and adoption of new technological systems.
At the final session, Ukraine's defense chief, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, connected virtually from Kiev to the NATO-Ukraine Council. The allies reiterated their firm support for the country in the face of Russian aggression and emphasized the importance of continuing to provide the necessary support for its defense.
At the end of the day, the Chairman of the Military Committee thanked his counterparts for their participation and expressed his expectation to meet again at the next meeting of this format scheduled for the end of the year.
