The Rota Naval Base was the scene of a historic event for the Spanish Navy: the incorporation of the first two NH-90 MSPT 'SABLE' helicopters, specially adapted for maritime missions. These aircraft, part of the Fourteenth Aircraft Squadron, represent the beginning of a technological renovation in the naval aviation capabilities of the Fleet.
Presided over by the Admiral in charge of the Cadiz Arsenal, Ruben Rodriguez Peña, the delivery ceremony symbolizes the beginning of a gradual deployment that will culminate in 2026 with a total of seven NH-90 MSPT units. This model is specifically designed to operate in maritime environments and on board platforms, providing the Navy with greater versatility, interoperability and efficiency.
Navalized NH-90s are equipped to perform a wide variety of missions: special forces tactical transport, medical evacuation, amphibious operations and advanced logistics support. Adapting to the demands of the naval environment marks a significant advance in the Navy's operational capabilities.
Since September 2024, the Fourteenth Squadron's personnel, composed of pilots and technicians, have been undergoing an intense training and education process. This preparation has been key to ensure a safe and effective transition to this new generation of helicopters, paving the way for their full operability in the naval environment.
