The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, appeared before the Senate Defense Committee to present the new Security and Defense Plan, endowed with more than 10,000 million euros. During her speech, she assured that this investment does not imply cuts in social policies and that it is a strategic commitment to security, employment and technological sovereignty of Spain.
Robles emphasized that the plan, which will make it possible to reach 2% of GDP in defense investment, "reaffirms Spain as a serious, reliable and responsible partner within the international community". He also highlighted its capacity to promote economic growth and industrial internationalization. As he explained, the Special Modernization Programs, which represent 36% of the total invested, will generate more than 23,000 direct jobs and 60,000 indirect jobs, with above-average salaries.
The Minister of Defense also reaffirmed the Government's commitment to technological independence in defense matters. She highlighted the quality of the national industry, mentioning projects such as the new advanced trainer for the Air and Space Army, which will involve collaboration with technology centers and universities, and will require qualified technical profiles.
Robles forcefully assured that "Spain has neither bought nor sold arms since the beginning of the conflict in Gaza", reiterating the Spanish government's position on the need to reduce foreign dependence on defense technology.
In the words of the minister, all this effort seeks to guarantee "a future of security, peace and freedom for the next generations", without renouncing industrial development and the protection of social welfare.
