The reopening of the barracks in Toro will mean the arrival of 1,400 military personnel and an investment of more than 130 million euros, with positive effects on employment and the economic fabric of the region.
The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, attended the presentation of the Regional Plan for the new Monte la Reina barracks in the town hall of Toro (Zamora). Accompanied by the JEME and the Secretary of State for Defense, Robles stressed the importance of institutional cooperation in this type of strategic projects.
The minister affirmed that "when we commit to something, we deliver", underlining the value of this action for a land "with so much history and so much future".
The reopening of the former military facilities closed in 1997 will allow the settlement of 1,400 soldiers and their families in the city of Toro, generating hundreds of jobs and boosting sectors such as commerce and services. The project contemplates a total investment of more than 130 million euros.
This barracks will also be a modern permanent base, a benchmark in sustainability, energy efficiency and technological innovation, and will have a maneuvering field, training and instruction facilities, and complementary headquarters.
The Government declared this project as an action of general interest in December 2024, as it is directly related to national defense. The initiative, originated by local authorities and the civil society of Zamora, was taken up by the Ministry of Defense as a strategic priority.
The Regional Plan also foresees infrastructure actions, such as new accesses, integration of water, electricity, sanitation, communication and waste management networks. This set of actions will allow the new base to be fully connected and adapted to the operational and sustainability needs of the 21st century.
