Spain reaffirms its commitment to NATO and presents its ambitious Security and Defense Plan

During the Atlantic Alliance ministerial meeting held in Brussels, the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, highlighted Spain's commitment to collective security, underlining the importance of the new National Security and Defense Plan as a response to current challenges.

The defense ministers of the 32 NATO member countries met at NATO Headquarters in Brussels to define the Capability Goals 2025 and make progress on the Defense Production Action Plan, in view of the upcoming Summit in The Hague. In this context, Robles emphasized the Spanish effort to reach the target of 2% of GDP in defense investment, highlighting the technological and industrial component of the Spanish plan.

Strong support for Ukraine and international coordination

At the NATO-Ukraine Council session, Robles reaffirmed Spain's "full and absolute support" for the Ukrainian people and called for maintaining allied unity as the key to achieving a just and lasting peace. Following the session, she held bilateral meetings with her Ukrainian counterpart, Rustem Umerov, as well as with German Minister Boris Pistorius and NATO representative for the Women, Peace and Security agenda, Irene Fellin.

In addition, Robles took the opportunity to thank General Cavioli, outgoing SACEUR commander, for his constant support to Spain and his work in favor of strengthening allied security.

Defense, industry and international engagement

During her speech, the minister underlined the technological capacity and potential of the Spanish defense industry to respond to current challenges: "Strengthening citizen security and advancing in industrial and technological development are strategic priorities". She also highlighted Spain's contribution to NATO with units deployed in Latvia, Romania and Slovakia, as well as its participation in the Reaction Force.

In parallel, Robles reiterated that the road to lasting peace in Ukraine goes through international cohesion, both in NATO and within the European Union and the Contact Group for the Defense of Ukraine.
