The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, reiterated the strategic and humanitarian importance of the Spanish deployment in the UNIFIL mission during her visit to the Cerro Muriano base in Cordoba, where she received the contingent recently returned from Lebanon.
During the ceremony, Robles highlighted the fundamental role played by the 'Guzmán el Bueno' X Brigade in the Blue Line, the buffer zone between Lebanon and Israel. More than 600 Spanish troops have been deployed for six months on foot and vehicle patrols, providing support to the Lebanese Armed Forces to ensure compliance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
The minister stressed that "if the Armed Forces are the most valued institution, it is thanks to each and every one of you who, with your professionalism and empathy, have earned the respect, recognition and affection of our country and of those where you are deployed".
Spain's mission in UNIFIL has significantly improved the security of the civilian population, facilitating access to medical, educational and humanitarian services in a region marked by instability. Robles emphasized that "thanks to its peacekeeping work, Spain contributes to peace in the world and to being able to help the civilian population that always suffers, closely and unjustly, the consequences of a conflict situation".
He also referred to parallel deployments in other areas such as Latvia and Valencia, remarking that "the uniform of our troops provides security wherever they are".
The 'Guzmán el Bueno' Brigade, part of the 'Castillejos' Division, is one of the most modern units of the Spanish Army. Founded 40 years ago as a mechanized infantry unit, it has evolved to become a reference in peacekeeping operations.
