Support for Ukraine and defense investment focus of European ministers' meeting in Brussels

The Minister of Defense, Margarita Roblesparticipated this Monday in the European Union defense ministers meetingheld in Brussels and convened by the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas. The meeting was marked by continued support for Ukraine and a commitment to strengthening Europe's defensive capabilities.

Strong commitment to Ukraine and European cohesion

During her speech, Robles reiterated Spain's strong support to Ukraine and underlined the importance of maintaining European unity and cohesion the geopolitical challenge posed by Russia:

"Our country is going to stand by Ukraine's side for as long as necessary, as it has done so far," the minister stated.

The first session was also attended by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutteand the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Rustem UmerovThe situation on the ground and the urgent military needs of his country were presented by videoconference.

Defense investment effort and industrial development

Robles emphasized Spain's commitment to the goal of achieving the 2% of GDP in defense spendingthrough the implementation of the Security and Defense Planequipped with almost 11 billion euros. This effort seeks to modernize the capabilities of the Armed Forces and contribute to European collective security.

The second working session focused on the ".Preparation for Defense"The event addressed initiatives such as the Defense White Paper 2030 and the plan "ReArm Europe"aimed at strengthening the defense industrial and technological base in the EU.

Defense of national industry as a strategic driver

The minister insisted that defense investment should not be limited to figures:

"It is not a matter of setting percentages, but of satisfying the necessary capabilities and boosting the Spanish and European defense industry to have a solid base, generating employment and first-rate technology."

Throughout the day, Robles was accompanied by the Admiral Juan Francisco Martínez NúñezThe Secretary General for Defense Policy, who participated in the various discussions together with the delegations of the other member states.
