The Government of Peru is deploying a comprehensive strategy to restore order and ensure sustainable development in the province of Pataz, currently in a State of Emergency.
During a press conference after the Council of Ministers, the Minister of Defense, Walter Astudillo Chavez, announced the deployment of 500 Special Forces troops from the Army, the Navy and the Peruvian Air Force, as part of the strengthening of the Unified Command of Pataz. This measure is in addition to the support of 1000 agents of the National Police, specialized in internal security operations.
The province of Pataz, located in La Libertad, has been under a State of Emergency since May 9, with the Armed Forces, in coordination with the Peruvian National Police, in charge of internal order control. The actions respond to the increase in violence generated by criminal gangs linked to illegal mining and other criminal activities.
Minister Astudillo emphasized that the Government's approach is not only military or repressive, but integrates a vision of sustainable development and crime prevention. To this end, the work of several state sectors, including the Ministries of the Interior, Energy and Mines, the Public Prosecutor's Office, local governments, social organizations and peasant patrols, is coordinated.
"These actions must be accompanied by the commitment of all parties to supervise and control the mine entrances, so that economic activities can be resumed, always favoring order and security," said the Defense Minister.
A high-level visit to the province will take place in the coming days, with the participation of the President of the Council of Ministers and the Ministers of Defense, Interior and Energy and Mines. The objective will be to supervise the actions of the Unified Command and provide direct political guidance to the forces deployed in the area.
Likewise, a territorial dialogue table will be set up, promoted by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the Ministry of Energy and Mines, which will bring together the social actors of Pataz. The purpose is to coordinate efforts to prevent criminal gangs from regaining control over the territory.
