As a result of a joint operation between several State forces, troops of the Colombian National Army were able to destroy yellow machinery used in illegal mining activities in the rural area of the municipality of Buenaventura, department of Valle del Cauca. This intervention is part of Plan Ayacucho Plus and represents a significant blow to both the environment and the financial structures of the residual armed group Jaime Mart\u00ednez, linked to illegal mining in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The military action was the result of six months of intelligence work carried out by the Army's Third Brigade, in coordination with the National Navy, the Colombian Aerospace Force and the National Police. During the operation, the authorities located three excavating machines, a diver-type dredge, an engine and two industrial power plants, with an estimated value of more than 1.1 billion Colombian pesos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This equipment was used for the illegal extraction of gold in the villages of Zaragoza and Los C\u00f3rdoba, with a monthly production estimated at 1,500 grams of the precious metal, which generated illicit income of approximately 534 million pesos. The destruction of this infrastructure represents a strong economic blow to the finances of the residual Jaime Mart\u00ednez group, affecting its operational capacity in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The operation also aimed to mitigate the environmental damage caused by these illegal mining activities. According to the official report, more than 1,600 cubic meters of soil were removed and about 2,100 native trees were deforested in an area of 3.5 hectares. In addition, the Dagua River was seriously affected by the use of highly toxic substances such as mercury and cyanide, used without any type of control or containment measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Environmental experts indicate that the recovery of the affected ecosystem could take more than 20 years, given the magnitude of the ecological impact. This situation has raised the alarm among environmental authorities and underscores the urgency of strengthening controls over mining production units (MPUs) that operate outside the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Colombian National Army reaffirmed, through an official communiqu\u00e9, its commitment to the defense of the environment and territorial sustainability. The military forces will continue to deploy operations in strategic areas to combat illegal mining, protect biodiversity and safeguard water resources, considered essential assets for the nation's development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These actions are part of a comprehensive security policy that not only seeks to neutralize the illegal economies of armed groups, but also to guarantee the preservation of the country's natural heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
