The Ministry of Defense has paid tribute this Monday to the thousands of military and civilian personnel who participated in the rescue and reconstruction operation after DANA 2024. In an emotional ceremony held at the Torrej\u00f3n de Ardoz air base, Minister Margarita Robles presented the commemorative medal to those deployed in Valencia, Letur and Mira (Castilla-La Mancha), the areas most affected by the natural catastrophe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More than 33,000 military personnel intervened in an operation that became the most extensive in our recent history. In critical moments alone, more than 8,600 troops were mobilized in a single day. The tasks included victim rescue, debris removal, water drainage, medical and psychological care, as well as logistical support and the installation of temporary bridges to restore mobility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Through a Royal Decree approved in April, the government established this special decoration for those who participated in the operation. \"It is much more than a medal; it is the symbol of the gratitude of all Spaniards,\" declared Robles. In her speech, she highlighted the commitment and bravery of the first 96 troops deployed on October 29, and thanked all those who spent months working away from their families for their sacrifice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event took place at the headquarters of the Military Emergency Unit (UME), the epicenter of emergency operations. The minister also wanted to send a message of encouragement to the members of the UME currently deployed in Catalonia to support firefighting: \"Our men and women are wherever they are needed, in any part of Spain\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In total, more than 13,000 actions were carried out. A total of 2,275 material resources were used, including 961 light vehicles, 107 fire engines, 34 extraction teams, 12 helicopters, 30 drones and 4 ships. More than 12 million kilometers were traveled by land and 1,670 flight hours were accumulated in an operation that today receives the official recognition it deserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
