The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, presided over an emotional tribute at the 'Pr\u00edncipe' Base in Paracuellos del Jarama to pay tribute to the six Spanish paratroopers who died in an attack in Lebanon in 2007. Robles stressed that \"serving Spain is an example and a source of pride\", underlining that the sacrifice of the Spanish military in international missions cannot be thanked enough. During his speech, he recalled that, every time he visits Lebanon, the local authorities continue to honor the deceased and express their brotherhood with Spain: \"There is a flame lit for them\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Currently, some 700 Spanish military personnel are deployed in Lebanon as part of the United Nations Interim Force (UNIFIL). Spain has been participating in this peacekeeping mission since 2006, earning the appreciation of the civilian population for its commitment to stability in a region plagued by conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The tribute commemorated the attack of June 24, 2007, when an explosive device was detonated as a Spanish convoy passed near the \"blue line\", the separation line between Lebanon and Israel. The fallen belonged to the 'Almog\u00e1vares' VI Paratroopers Brigade, a unit with a long history of participation in international missions since the 1990s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The BRIPAC, today integrated in the 'San Marcial' Division, acts as an immediate response unit.
