Spain maintains an outstanding presence in NATO missions in Latvia, Slovakia and Romania. This was underlined by the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, during a videoconference with the deployed contingents, in which she thanked them for their efforts and acknowledged the fundamental role they play in the stability of the region.

Recognition of Spanish commitment

During the connection, Robles highlighted the context of tension in the area: "Romania, Slovakia and Latvia, due to their geographical situation, live in fear and uncertainty. However, the Spanish contribution is synonymous with security and professionalism". Accompanied by the JEMAD, the minister personally thanked the deployed soldiers: "You enhance our country and materialize Spain's commitment to the Atlantic Alliance".

Robles insisted that Spain is "a serious and reliable partner in NATO", whose capabilities and personnel contribute directly to peace and security in Europe.

Contingents in Eastern Europe

Spain currently has a presence in all three countries with a total of more than 1,600 employees:

  • SlovakiaThe Spanish army, with almost 800 soldiers, is the country to which Spain contributes the most troops. They are deployed in Lest, forming part of the Multinational Brigade, with units of the Army, Common Corps and Civil Guard. They include 'Tiger' and NH-90 helicopters and an anti-aircraft defense unit.
  • LatviaMore than 600 military personnel are part of the Canadian-led Multinational Battalion in Adazi. Spain has deployed 'Leopard 2E' battle tanks, 'Pizarro' vehicles, field artillery and a NASAMS unit at Lievarde air base.
  • RomaniaAbout 240 troops are part of the French-led Multinational Battalion in Cincu, including Marines and an airborne detachment with a surveillance radar at the Schitu base.

Pride and international recognition

The contingent leaders underlined "the very high recognition of Spain in this area", and stressed the pride of contributing to the common European defense under the Spanish flag. This deployment not only reflects the country's operational capability, but also its strong commitment to Euro-Atlantic security.
