
During an official visit to the frigate 'Méndez Núñez', deployed in the framework of the international operation HighmastThe Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, highlighted the technological and human capabilities of the Spanish Navy, assuring that "we have nothing to envy to other countries". The ship is currently in Souda Bay, on the island of Crete (Greece), as part of the British aircraft carrier Battle Group. Prince of Waleswith a mission focused on escort and anti-aircraft defense tasks in the geostrategic environment of the Indo-Pacific.
During her speech on board, Minister Robles thanked the 210 members of the ship's crew, stressing that "technology and advances are important, but what really counts is the human component". She also said that Spain's international prestige in the field of defense is due to the commitment, professionalism and dedication of the Armed Forces, values which, she said, are beginning to be forged in training centers such as the Naval Military School.
In this sense, Robles was accompanied by about twenty students from the School, who also visited the frigate and shared experiences with the crew members. The purpose of the activity was to promote practical knowledge of the Navy's operational capabilities and to reinforce the link between academic training and the actual exercise of national defense.
The F-104 frigate 'Méndez Núñez', belonging to the F100 class, set sail on April 25 from Ferrol to participate in the Highmast deployment, which will last 168 days and will cover nearly 23,000 nautical miles. Its main task within the Combat Group is to provide anti-aircraft coverage, a key capability that consolidates the role of the Spanish Navy in the context of multinational joint operations.
In addition to its operational tasks, the frigate will make stopovers for diplomatic support and cooperation in strategic ports such as Manila, Singapore and La Veleta. These visits reinforce Spain's international presence and its defense industry, while consolidating cooperation with allies in key regions of the Indo-Pacific.
